Shopping the Shelves

Sarah and Martin walked into the used bookstore. The smell of old paper, leather, and dust was intoxicating to both of them.

The tiny space was crammed with row upon row of bookcases reaching to the ceiling and as far as the eye could see. Each case contained hundreds of volumes, all lovingly placed in perfect symmetry. This was more than a store, it was someone’s baby. This store was like buying from a private library.

“What’s the first title you’re looking for?” Sarah asked.

“The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams.”

“Can you show me your list so far?”

“It isn’t really a list. I just put things down as I thought of them.”

“That’s called a list, silly.”

“OK, but I warned you.”

Martin handed Sarah a college-ruled piece of notebook paper. The handwriting was small and precise, almost like what she’d seen on architectural drawings. See glanced quickly at the list:
